Lactic acid products for dry skin Is Lactic acid an AHA?

Exfoliation is such an important step in your skincare routine. AHA (lactic acid) chemical peel exfoliators work to gently remove the top, dead layer of skin without the need for scrubs which can feel quite harsh on dry, sensitive skin. Lactic acid helps to dissolve the glue like bond that holds on the dead skin to the surface, it’s a more effective way to exfoliate and gives even results.

Regular use of a lactic acid AHA chemical peel will also enhance the efficacy (effectiveness) of the other products in your routine as they will be absorbed faster and won’t need to penetrate a layer of dead skin cells first.

The difference between AHA and BHA exfoliants

BHA exfoliants such as salicylic acid work within the pores while AHA exfoliants mainly work on the skin's surface making them particularly suitable for blemished skin, dry skin, hyperpigmentation, discolouration and age spots. There are various alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), at Bravura London our favourites are Glycolic acid and Lactic acid. Lactic acid is a gentler acid and is therefor more suitable if you have sensitive skin or skin prone to dehydration.

How should you exfoliate?

If you are new to using lactic acid exfoliators, start with a lower percentage, you also don’t want a routine full of exfoliators, choose between a chemical peel or a product you’d use daily. Apply after cleansing. Our chemical peels are best applied with a brush or fingers, don’t use a cotton pad, this will waste the product. Apply over the entire face, avoiding the eye area. During the day, follow with a moisturiser that contains a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF of at least 30.
